Field trial at Mongstad

Written on juni 03 2026

Nicoustic has successfully completed a feasibility trial of our non-intrusive acoustic level measurement technology at Equinor’s Mongstad refinery in Norway. The two-day trial, conducted in May 2026, tested Nicoustic’s guided ultrasonic wave technology for detecting sludge levels inside a large ballast water storage tank — entirely from the outside of the vessel wall, with no process interruption required.

The trial produced high-quality measurement data across 18 measurement positions on the tank, demonstrating the robustness of Nicoustic’s clamp-on sensor system in a live industrial environment. The results provide valuable insights that will be used to further refine the technology for non-intrusive level measurement.

The Mongstad trial adds to Nicoustic’s growing field experience, alongside an ongoing trial on the Snorre A offshore platform. We continue to develop our technology for level and interface measurement applications across the energy sector, supported by The Research Council of Norway and in collaboration with six operating companies.
